Your first chiropractic visit should be a conversation and assessment before it becomes a plan. You should have time to explain what is happening, ask questions and understand the options. Treatment on the same day may or may not be appropriate.
If you are visiting Kinetic Chiropractic in Oakland, the clinic’s new-patient process begins with an initial consultation and health history. Here is how to arrive prepared without overthinking it.
What to bring
- A photo ID and insurance information if you intend to use coverage
- A list of medications, supplements and relevant diagnoses
- Dates and reports from recent imaging, surgery or specialist visits
- Names of clinicians involved in the same concern
- Two or three activities you want to do more comfortably
- Questions about techniques, cost and next steps
You usually do not need to carry every medical record you have ever received. Start with information connected to the current concern and tell the clinician what else exists.
What to wear
Choose comfortable clothing that lets you move. Flexible trousers, leggings, shorts and a simple top are usually easier than restrictive workwear. If you are coming from an office near Downtown Oakland or Lake Merritt, bringing a change of clothes can make the assessment less awkward.
Ask the clinic in advance if your appointment involves any clothing requirements. You should be offered privacy and an explanation before any examination.
What the conversation may cover
Expect questions about when symptoms started, whether there was an injury, what movements affect them, sleep, work demands, exercise and previous care. Be direct about pregnancy, osteoporosis, blood-thinning medication, recent surgery, cancer history, infection, neurological symptoms or other relevant conditions.
That information does not automatically rule care in or out. It helps the clinician decide whether an examination is appropriate and whether another type of assessment should come first.
What the physical assessment may include
The exact examination should reflect your complaint. It may include posture or movement observation, range-of-motion checks, palpation and selected strength, reflex or sensation tests. Ask what each test is checking and tell the practitioner if something is painful or uncomfortable.
Imaging is not a compulsory feature of every first chiropractic visit. If an X-ray or other test is suggested, ask what clinical question it is intended to answer, how the result would change the plan and what it will cost.
Will you be adjusted on the first visit?
Possibly, but it should not be assumed. The practitioner first needs enough information to judge whether a proposed technique fits your history and findings. You should hear the expected purpose, reasonable alternatives and relevant risks before consenting.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health has patient summaries on chiropractic and spinal manipulation. They are useful for forming questions before an appointment.
Five questions worth asking in the room
- What do you think is contributing to this problem?
- What are the reasonable options, including doing nothing today?
- What result should we look for, and by when?
- What symptoms would mean I should contact a physician instead?
- What will today and any follow-up visits cost?
Clear answers matter more than technical language. If you do not understand the explanation, ask for it in plain English.
When an ordinary appointment is not the right first stop
Seek urgent medical assessment for symptoms such as new or increasing limb weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, a major traumatic injury or severe symptoms that are rapidly worsening. Call 911 for an emergency.
If you are unsure, tell the clinic exactly what is happening before you travel. A responsible office should help you choose the appropriate route rather than simply put you on the schedule.
After the appointment
Before leaving, make sure you understand what was found, what was not determined, what you can do at home, what reactions might be expected and when to follow up. You should also know how progress will be reviewed.
Do not confuse a busy treatment plan with a good treatment plan. The useful question is whether the plan has a clear purpose, a review point and an exit or referral route if it is not helping.
